Dental Implants in Durham, NC
Dental implants are a long-lasting solution for replacing missing teeth. A natural tooth has two main parts: the visible crown used for chewing and the root that anchors the tooth beneath the gumline. When a tooth is lost, both the crown and root are missing. A dental implant replaces the root with a small titanium post that is placed in the jawbone, creating a stable foundation for a custom crown, bridge, or denture.
Over time, the jawbone heals around the implant through a process called osseointegration. Once the implant has bonded with the bone, an abutment is attached, followed by a natural-looking restoration designed to match your smile. In some cases, a temporary replacement tooth may be placed the same day as implant surgery.
At Durham Dental Implants & Cosmetic Dentistry, Dr. Geoffrey R. Cunningham and Dr. R. Kyle Gazdeck provide advanced implant dentistry for patients missing one tooth, several teeth, or all of their teeth. As board-certified prosthodontists, they specialize in restoring function, comfort, and aesthetics with dental implants that are carefully planned to look and feel like natural teeth.
Dental implants offer many advantages over traditional tooth replacement options. They can help preserve jawbone health, support facial structure, improve chewing ability, and restore confidence when speaking, eating, and smiling. Unlike dental bridges, implants do not require altering adjacent healthy teeth. With proper brushing, flossing, and routine dental visits, dental implants can provide reliable results for many years.
Dental Implant Options
Durham Dental Implants & Cosmetic Dentistry offers several implant treatment options based on your needs, oral health, and goals.
- Single tooth implants: Replace one missing tooth with a titanium implant and custom crown.
- Multiple tooth implants: Support a bridge or partial denture when several teeth are missing.
- Full mouth dental implants: Restore a full arch of missing teeth with implant-supported dentures, All-on-4 style treatment, or individual implants.
- Same-day temporary restorations: In select cases, a temporary tooth or prosthesis may be attached shortly after implant placement.
Recent advances in dental implant technology have made treatment more efficient and comfortable. Some implants can be placed using a single-stage approach, which may eliminate the need for a second procedure to uncover the implant. In certain cases, an implant can also be placed at the same time as a tooth extraction, helping reduce the number of surgical visits required.

He is honored to be named as Durham Magazine’s Top Dentist by his peers, year after year.
Simply put, Dr. Cunningham loves the art and science of dentistry and is very passionate about the pursuit of clinical excellence. The decision to specialize in Prosthodontics is based on this passion and the yearning to have the ability to treat more complex multidisciplinary cases, a skill that is not taught in the general dentistry realm. He is also has many local and out of state dentists come to him for their own dental care.
Dr. Cunningham is married to his wife, Karen Cunningham. They have two daughters, Annalee and Audrey. When he isn’t working to improve your smile, Dr. Cunningham enjoys outdoor sports, reading, watching documentaries, and spending time with family.

A year later in 2018 he completed his formal education after a fellowship in Maxillofacial Prosthetics, a subspecialty of prosthodontics involving head and neck cancer, at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
